Amsterdam is the capital of Netherlands. Its name was derived from the Amstel river and the dam built across its bridge. The very well known figures who lived here were Anne Frank, Rembrandt and Vincent van Gogh. There are only 35 people per hectare living in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam is one of the five best cities in Europe. Its Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange in the world. Amsterdam is also known for Europe's centre of free press.
Amsterdam is an architectural beauty. Every year, it receives more than 4.63 million international tourists.

Germany invaded Netherlands in 1940. Sixty thousand Dutch Jews who lived in Amsterdam were sent to Nazi concentration camps. Canadian forces liberated Amsterdam in 1945.
